Osculate my manbag, Microsoft.

Just black, please…

Well, the negatives are out of the tank and the jury has returned to the courtroom. Although it’s hard to tell without actually scanning the frames, the roll of Acros I developed in coffee (Caffenol-C recipe, Nescafe Gold Blend if you’re interested) appears to have turned out rather nicely.

I only wish I could post the results here, but I will as soon as I have that scanner. In the meantime, here is the formula of the secret brew, courtesy of Scot Powles:

  • 300ml water @ 20 degrees C
  • 33ml / 18g soda crystals
  • 5ml / 5g pure vitamin C powder
  • 53ml / 13g instant coffee (not decaf)

Add each ingredient one at a time, making sure each is fully dissolved before adding the next. Leave the mixture to stand for approximately 5 minutes to allow micro-bubbles to disperse.

Pre-soak as normal, then develop for 15 minutes. Agitate constantly for first minute, then three times each minute thereafter.

Stop bath may not be necessary due to developer becoming inactive relatively quickly, but I did my usual 1 minute water @ 20 degrees C just to be safe. Fix, rinse and wet as normal.

NOTE: Given the staining properties of the coffee and the stubborn nature of the solution you may want to discard your fixer after use. If like me you are a tightwad and want to re-use your fixer it’s probably worth rinsing three to four times between stop bath and fixer using water at 20 degrees C, agitating several times each rinse to ensure your tank is thoroughly clean.
